Happy Birthday Trey Anastasio: Watch 5 Recent Sit-Ins
Trey Anastasio celebrates his 57th birthday today. The beloved Phish guitarist was born Ernest Giuseppe Anastasio III on September 30, 1964 in Fort Worth, Texas but moved to Princeton, New Jersey with his family at age three. Trey has always exhibited a highly collaborative attitude toward music whether it be in his decades-long career with Phish — including his wildly prolific work with lyricist Tom Marshall — and his main solo project the Trey Anastasio Band or other side projects like Oysterhead and joining members of the Grateful Dead in 2015 for their Fare Thee Well concerts. Anastasio breathes music and is always quick to sit-in with his friends and collaborators.
Although there have been abundant Trey guest appearances throughout the years, JamBase goes backwards down the number line to take a look at five recent sit-ins in celebration of the guitarist’s birthday today.

Celisse Henderson at The Peach Music Festival | July 3, 2021
The list begins with one of the most recent, Anastasio’s appearance with his Ghosts Of The Forest bandmate Celisse Henderson at the 2021 Peach Music Festival on July 3. Performing later that evening with Oysterhead, Trey popped into Celisse’s afternoon set to sit-in on her song “Undercover” and stuck around for renditions of “Keep Your Eyes On The Prize” and Led Zeppelin’s “Rock And Roll.”

Khruangbin at LOCKN | August 22, 2019
Stellar Texas trio Khruangbin welcomed Anastasio for a good portion of their set at the 2019 LOCKN’ Festival in Arrington, Virginia on August 22. The artists have a great deal of mutual respect for one another with Khruangbin guitarist Mark Speer introducing Trey as a “very good friend.” Earlier that year, Khruangbin had opened up for Trey’s Ghosts Of The Forest at the Greek in Berkeley. While Anastasio would sit-in for most of Khruangbin’s set, it began with “Lady And Man.”

Vulfpeck at Red Rocks | May 31, 2017
On May 31, 2017, Trey Anastasio Band returned to Red Rocks for the first time since 2005. Intensifying the anticipation was opening band Vulfpeck. Given Anastasio’s history of collaboration, fans were sure of a sit-in during Vulfpeck’s set. Trey did indeed join the funk outfit after being hilariously introduced by Vulf’s Theo Katzman saying “We just found this guy in the parking lot and he was like ‘is it cool if I sit-in?’” Trey emerged for a rendition of Vulfpeck’s “Rango” which encompassed Michael Jackson’s “Will You Be There.”
