Greensky Bluegrass Welcomes Holly Bowling & Railroad Earth Members At Red Rocks

Jamgrass act Greensky Bluegrass closed out a three-night stand at Red Rocks on Sunday with help from keyboardist Holly Bowling and members of Railroad Earth. Bowling joined the band for most of last night’s show at the iconic Morrison, Colorado venue, while RRE’s John Skehan, Tim Carbone and Todd Sheaffer also contributed to the encore.

The quintet opened with “Monument,” a recently debuted song. Dobroist Anders Beck explained he co-wrote “Monument” with a friend as what they hoped would be the first song back after getting through “all this COVID shit.” From there, Greensky worked “Wish I Didn’t Know” into Ween’s “Exactly Where I’m At.” The band premiered the tune from the 2000 Ween album White Pepper at Horning’s Hideout in North Plains, Oregon on July 28.

Guitarist Dave Bruzza had his first turn in the spotlight on Benny Burle Galloway’s “Train Junkie” before GSBG offered up a take on the Townes Van Zandt classic “White Freight Liner Blues.” Next, “More Of Me” was paired with “It’s Not Mine Anymore.” Then, Holly Bowling emerged and would stay out for the rest of the frame, the entire second set and the evening’s encore. Bowling’s guest appearance began with a “Broke Mountain Breakdown” featuring a cover of “Ride Captain Ride” by Blues Image within. “Ride Captain Ride” was last played by Greensky way back on Halloween 2016 as per Phantasy Tour. Holly and GSBG mandolinist Paul Hoffman then capped with the set with a “Windshield” duet.

The quintet and Holly Bowling kicked off last night’s second set with “Who Is Frederico?” and “Stress Dreams.” Greensky and the keyboardist then went with old school originals in pairing “Lose My Way” and “I’d Probably Kill You.” A take on The Allman Brothers Band-popularized “One Way Out” came next ahead of a well-jammed “Don’t Lie” set closer.

Greensky Bluegrass and Holly Bowling returned for the encore with mandolinist John Skehan, guitarist Todd Sheaffer and fiddler Tim Carbone of opening act Railroad Earth. The nine musicians dug in on a medley of GSBG original “Leap Year” and RRE original “Head.” Sheaffer handled lead vocals on “Head” which was last played by Greensky on January 11, 2018. The wild medley spanned nearly 30 minutes and provided a special ending to a special weekend at Red Rocks.
