Umphrey’s McGee Debuts Talking Heads Cover At Red Rocks

Umphrey’s McGee debuted a cover of Talking Heads’ “This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)” on Friday night in Red Rocks outside Denver. The operation was that the opening night of this group ’s three-show run in the scenic outdoor place.

“JaJunk” has been selected to open the initial set and soon resulted in the evening’s lengthy jam that included parts of The Rolling Stones’ “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking. ” Guitarist Brendan Bayliss took the lead on “Roulette,” while guitarist Jake Cinninger followed by steering the group by “Booth Love” and a subsequent groove-oriented jam. Next, the band worked during the “Plunger,” that transitioned into “Cemetery Walk. ”

The aggressive character “Wizard Bury Ground” has been countered by Bayliss with the viewers give a “unique ” recognition to a longtime fan attending his 500th Umphrey’s show. UM stayed on the heavy side by segueing into “Noopener,” before easing up a bit together “Attachments. ” The set ended with a return to complete “Wizard Burial Ground. ”

Set two started using “Restrung,” the recently released one which ’s reworked version of “Unsung Hero. ” The second half continued with “The Silent Type” & “Ocean Billy,” every delivering substantial improvisational sequences. The “Ocean Billy” jam setup the introduction of “This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody),” that drew cheers from the crowd at its beginning and conclusion. The cover introduction has been trailed by “Day Nurse” as drummer Kris Myers along with percussionist Andy Farag have been awarded the spotlight before a return to finish “Ocean Billy. ”

“Miami Virtue” led to another dose of jamming along with a transition into “Den. ” Cinninger introduced keyboardist Joel Cummins, bassist Ryan Stasik along with others on stage at Red Rocks, before launching into longtime setlist staple “Phil’s Farm,” that closed out the set. UM’s night in Colorado ended with an encore consisting of this instrumentals “Glory” and “Cemetery Walk II. ”
