Joe Russo’s Almost Dead Takes ‘Shelter From The Storm’ On This Date In 2017

A special Joe Russo’s Almost Dead concert took place at 1st Bank Center in Broomfield, Colorado on this date in 2017. JRAD was supposed to make their headlining debut at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado that night but the show was moved indoors due to poor weather. The quintet turned in a fantastic performance which included the debut of a Bob Dylan cover and guest appearances from Stuart Bogie, John Medeski, Billy Martin and Adam Morford.

It didn’t take long for the band — which consists of drummer Joe Russo, guitarists Scott Metzger and Tom Hamilton, bassist Dave Dreiwitz and keyboardist Marco Benevento — to reference the situation as they opened with their first ever take on Dylan’s “Shelter From The Storm.” Hamilton handled lead vocals on the cover along with the version of “Bertha” that followed.

An expansive “Let It Grow” sung by Metzger was up next and included a jam on Led Zeppelin’s “No Quarter.” The end of “Let It Grow” bled into “Help On The Way” before a 10-minute “Slipknot!” gave way to an adventurous “Throwing Stones.” Hamilton once again stepped into the spotlight to front the group on “It Must’ve Been The Roses.” Another debut followed as Scott led JRAD through “Gonesville,” a song from Bob Weir‘s 2016 album, Blue Mountain. A powerful “Shakedown Street” then brought the first set to a close.

Medeski and Martin were on hand as Medeski Martin & Wood were scheduled to kick off the evening at Red Rocks. The second set in Broomfield began in unusual fashion. Russo, Medeski, Martin and percussionist Adam Morford emerged on a riser and engaged in a wild drum/percussion jam dubbed “Morfbeats” after instruments Adam built and utilized. Eventually, John Medeski took his place behind the organ and the rest of the band came out along with Bogie for a bit of “Space” that led into “Dark Star.” Martin and Morford remained on percussion throughout a 15-minute “Dark Star” featuring Medeski on organ and Bogie on sax and flute.

While Medeski, Martin and Morford vacated the stage after “Dark Star,” Stuart Bogie stuck around for the rest of the night. Bogie played clarinet on a “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo” that JRAD jammed into “Estimated Prophet.” A particularly cool reggae segment connected the two songs. Next up was a full “Terrapin Station Suite” that spanned 26 minutes and saw the six musicians toy with tempos throughout. Dreiwitz then starred on a quick and potent “The Other One” before Almost Dead and Bogie dug in on “Eyes Of The World” to end the frame.

The encore of the three-hour-and-forty-six-minute concert, the longest JRAD show up to that point, began with a “One More Saturday Night” featuring a “Cold Rain & Snow” jam. It seemed “Not Fade Away,” complete with an excursion through “Tequila,” would end the night. However, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead and Stuart Bogie returned for a second encore as a pretty “Ripple” was followed by a cover of Bruce Springsteen‘s “Born To Run” played with the house lights on. Joe Russo’s Almost Dead wound up returning to Colorado a few months later to finally make their Red Rocks headlining debut on August 31, 2017.
