Phoebe Bridgers Duets With Jackson Browne For Meditative Take on ‘Kyoto’: Listen

Phoebe Bridgers and Chika have re-recorded their signature songs and tracked covers for Spotify’s celebration of the 2021 Grammy Awards best new artist nominees.

The series kicked off on Tuesday (March 9) with a double-shot of songs from Bridgers, including a meditative, acoustic version of “Kyoto” with backing vocals from the legendary Jackson Browne, who first teamed with her in 2018 on a version of “Christmas Song.” “Kyoto” is nominated for best rock song and best rock performance, while Bridgers is also up for best alternative music album for Punisher.

Bridgers’ cover is a whispery take on the late John Prine’s “Summer’s End,” which opens with a voicemail from Bridgers’ gramps wishing her a happy birthday.

Chika also got in on the action with an unplugged, wistful version of her song “U Should” and a warm take on Billie Eilish’s “My Future.”

“I picked ‘My Future’ by Billie Eilish as my BNA cover for Spotify because the song is beautiful and presents an interesting opportunity to talk about where I am as an artist, especially on the heels of this nomination,” Chika said in a statement. “My present is moving so fast that each passing moment is practically the future already. And I’m in love with the ride I’m on.”

This week will also see similar Spotify drops from fellow best new artist nominees D Smoke (Wednesday), Noah Cyrus (Thursday) and Ingrid Andress (Friday); Doja Cat, Kaytranada and Megan Thee Stallion are also up for best new artist.
