Review – Oxeye Daisy Left the Hi-Dive Wanting More

Oxeye Daisy once again proved they are a force to be reckoned with after their stellar performance in the Hi-Dive on Saturday. The Denver-based dream-pop ring celebrated their very first concert of 2019 by headlining a night of exclusively female-fronted acts  –something that’s so uncommon in the music scene — sponsored by Colorado Public Radio’s OpenAir. With support from Pout House along with Tyto Albaenergy overtook the romantic venue — but it had been anything but gentle.  Over two decades since their beginning, Oxeye Daisy has managed to solidify a reputation because of their shows — and this was no exception.

Tyto Alba immediately won over the audience with their brand of indie rock that was shoegaze. Steinway’s ethereal voice lead the currently packed audience, bobbing into the dreamy, guitar-driven music.  The odor of incense lifted through the atmosphere as the stage lights flashed between warm pinks and trendy blue hues, including the mysterious nature of the show. Towards the conclusion of their set, Steinway and Rossi fulfilled in the middle of the stage, touching their foreheads together through a specially romantic moment. Tyto Alba closed out with a cover of Alvvays’ “Party Police,” with Steinway’s voice lilting within the tender lyric “don’t even have to leave, it is possible to just stay here with me. ”

Oxeye Daisy shut by inviting Tyto Alba back up into the stage to execute their alliance of The Cranberries, “Dreams. ” Encouraging audience involvement, the entire venue sang along, making a genuinely satisfying finish to a magnetic performance. Having a nice mix of familiar songs and previously unheard tracks, Oxeye Daisy had the crowd hooked from the very start. Minutes seemed to pass like moments since the audience hung lead singer Lela Roy’s each word, whether whispered, sung or yelled. Following the close of the final song, audience members were left exchanging amazing looks, in amazement and hungry for much more. While the set seemed relatively brief, it had been jam-packed from begin to finish with plenty of turns and twists to keep the crowd engaged. At one stage, Roy even escalated to the audience after the delight of the manic “Close Toe. ” Although the group sent on all frontswe expect to spend time with this band in the future as we anxiously await our next Oxeye Daisy fix.
