The most sought Netflix show in every state — and how a researcher found them

Among the core assumptions about Netflix is that, thanks to its popularity and ubiquity, the service could blur boundaries. From Nashua, New Hampshire, to Newport Beach, California, Seattle to Sarasota, Florida, we’re watching the same thing. (And that thing, it appears, is “The Crown. ”)

Except it turns out we’re .

A researcher in Salt Lake City named Victoria Merinda has compiled the many searched-for Netflix shows in the nation over this past year and then proceeded to break them down by state. Plus it turns out, Americans are fascinated in rather different shows depending on where they live.

To wit: No single series caught the top position in one-fifth of states.

Equally surprising, 12 states — basically a quarter of this nation — had a favourite series that no other nation had. Whether it was “Gilmore Girls: A Year In the Life” (North Dakota) & “Disenchantment” (Oregon), “House of Cards” (Tennessee) & “Mindhunter” (Pennsylvanians, those dark souls), these countries went their own way.

“I had been curious to check whether certain regions liked one series and other regions liked a different series,” said Merinda, who helped conduct the study for the tech-comparison website HighSpeedInternet.com. “But it turned out that many nations had different outcomes. ”

Merinda and her coworkers took approximately 40 of the very high-profile shows available on the agency, both accredited series and Netflix originals, maintaining them mainly to people that created new episodes within the past few decades. Then she examined Google Trends in each nation for 2018 to determine which of those 40 rated highest. (She acknowledges 40 is a selective group, and that there are lots of lower-profile shows not included in the analysis. Also worth noting: Google Trends is nevertheless one mark of a series ’s electronic warmth.)

The highest trending of these Netflix series? “13 Reasons Why. ” The Bakerian teen drama polarized viewers last year but still was the very talked-about in seven countries, including Illinois, New Jersey, North Carolina and Mississippi.

Right behind it together with wins from six states — including places as far apart as Maine, Iowa, Nevada and South Carolina — has been “The End of The F***ing World,” the play about a pair of disaffected teens traveling around England. (If nothing else, the poll demonstrates how much teens are driving this flowing dialog. Which ought to make Netflix joyful, or even its equally youth-seeking competitions )

Those two shows aren’t significant openings: They each saw the buzzy launch of fresh seasons in 2018. And their broad popularity makes the person states that chose them not especially meaningful.

However, a range of countries went for more geographically unique choices.

Some of those easily compute. You’d anticipate “Making a Murderer” to become popular in Wisconsin, where the story took place. “Ozark” for Missouri isn’t even a stretch. Along with the most sought-after shows in New Mexico were “Breaking Bad” & &; ldquo;Better Call Saul,” both of which can be very clearly set there.

However, others might require more innovative explanations.

Like “Iron Fist,” the Marvel series on a societal outlier. Two of those 3 countries where it was most-popular? Alaska and Hawaii, the two countries not on the U.S. mainland. (It was popular in Delaware. Draw your own conclusions.)

Meanwhile, “Stranger Things” has been popular in several countries. But all of these were within a particular westerly bloc (Colorado, Utah, Idaho and Nebraska).

“Maybe there’s something into the idea that with this distance out here, people are more likely to turn into creepy mysteries and conspiracy theories like ‘Stranger Things,’” said Merinda, a Utah resident and also a confessed devotee of this set. (The series ’s prevalence, it should be noted, may have been higher if it had come out with a brand new season this season.

Population might play a role in the selection of some other series out West. Wyoming went “Lost In Space,” the reboot of this classic 1960s TV series about a family struggling to live in a regularly empty location. Wyoming, incidentally, is the least populous state by density in the Lower 48.

Subsequently there’s “Orange Is The New Black. ” Among the five countries where it was popular were Oklahoma and Louisiana, states that have the nation ’s 2 highest prison populations.

The results are surprisingly telling all around. Americans may flow shows they enjoy. However, what they enjoy is often what hits close to home.

There can be little method to spell out “Jane The Virgin,” a series so little seen on network television it’s sometimes viewed by as few as 500,000 people. Nevertheless the series ended above all other people in California and Texas, the two most populous countries in the nation (total number of people: almost 70 million). That validates the CW’therefore debate, at least, that folks are watching the series somewhere, somehow.

You’d have less difficulty guessing which nation chose a handcrafted, off-kilter series like “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” (it’s Vermont) or lining up Massachusetts, state of British influence and a very long history of police squaring away with crime syndicates, with its pick. “Peaky Blinders” comprises both.
