A First Look at Denver Art Museum’s Highly Anticipated Dior Exhibit
It’s with sheer enthusiasm that Denver fashion lovers anxiously await the opening of Dior: From Paris to the World in the Denver Art Museum (DAM) on November 19. Organized from the DAM and curated from Florence Müller, the DAM’s Avenir Foundation Curator of Textile Art and Fashion, the exhibition will include 202 haute couture dresses spanning seven decades and will profile creator Christian Dior and the House’s subsequent artistic directors. It’s a big moment for Denver style since the Mile High will debut what’s now the first major Dior retrospective shown in the US.
“Showing 70 decades of Christian Dior has been a huge project to bring together all these examples from 1947 until today and to have real examples of all the seven artistic directors. Everything you see here in this display [are] examples that are extremely emblematic of the background of the house but also each of the seven designers,” explained Müller.
Before it opens to the public, Müller and her team peeled back the curtain for us through a distinctive behind-the-scenes look. The sneak peek shown the “Ladies of Dior” space which emphasized famous American and global women who have worn Dior haute couture. Indoors you’ll discover looks that span decades of red carpet glamour including Jennifer Lawrence’s renowned blush-toned Oscar dress to some major Rihanna minute all the solution to gowns worn by Grace Kelly and Marilyn Monroe. In accordance with Müller, the exhibit is installed to feel as though the women are in discussion and are placed to peer faceless through the decades in corresponding looks.
“The display reveals what’s fundamental, what’s in the DNA of this house but also what is unique about the designers like for instance, John Galliano was so renowned for his eccentricity and Maria Chiuri is famous for her vision of femininity and feminism and her involvement in all types of powerful messages that she is putting on her clothes and t-shirts to assist the feminine power in the world,” said Müller.
Christian Dior led a radical period in fashion after World War II that embraced the feminine form. As girls returned home by factories that they craved a means to say themselves. Dior responded with a debut set that comprised opulent couture with female contours. The House’s latest artistic director, Maria Grazia Chiuri, continues to execute Dior’s fantasy of feminine empowerment through trend and DAM traffic are going to be able to follow that journey too.
In addition to connecting past to present, yet another impressive feature of the exhibit is the feeling that the audience is undergoing something completely new and lovely. “When you start the crates and you also see the dresses coming out of the crates I always say it’s like Christmas,” shared Müller. “It’therefore like presents and the Dior team is functioning in shaping the dresses and unexpectedly they look so distinct, it’therefore like another life after the life they had on the catwalk. ”
Just as Müller and the DAM have given life back to some of this House of Dior’s most iconic dresses worn by Marlene Dietrich, Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, Zoë Kravitz and more people, as the viewers, will also be able to provide this haute couture a brand new presence in our own lives during our adoration.
