Dusky show vulnerability with ‘Aset Forever’ release [EP Review]
The only action to take is to keep moving, when disaster strikes. This is a reality that Alfie and Nick of Dusky have been forced to encounter the passing of the close friend Jan “Aset” Francis in late 2017. In their own time spent recovery from their loss, Aset Forever shown itself as catharsis. It’s the very first body of work found from the illustrious duo because Square Miso, and also signals their willingness to move past their hardship and back to the swing of traveling life.
They showed their opposition against wallowing in self confidence through the EP’s first single, “Amongst The Gods. ” Clearly paying homage it carries a favorable connotation concealed beneath its blend of house and breaks. Aset is in a better place. This border to the sorrow continues on into “Ace,” a underground variety whose acid concentrations evoke imagery of warehouses that are subterranean such as those Jan Francis aided a nascent Dusky play in when their career began.
“Staunch” deals with all loss’ angrier aspect, with creeping harmonies on the end and 24, painting an picture moans that send shivers down your spine. “Angles” lightens floating bouts of scenic melodies and breaks along that facilitate the listener from the darkened place they were brought in together with the paths before. Greater doses of melody and its retro appeal are unabashedly Dusky. Eventually, “The Captain” ties all the the emotions present in Aset Forever to a bittersweet package.
